Journaling for Young Writers

The only way that English KS2 students can improve their written language is with daily practice. Journaling is an excellent way for students to get into the habit of daily writing. Many teachers misuse journaling as a tool for extra work or an editing lesson. Journaling should be a personal and fun adventure for students. Always allow students free reign on their journal contents. Teachers should only provide topic suggestions when students cannot think of something to write on their own. Because of the nature journaling, students should never be forced to share their journals with other students. Encourage students to search through their journal for ideas that can be used with future writing assignments. This is where students will learn the value of free writing and writing down their thoughts.
